Russell Henley birdied the final three holes of regulation and the first playoff hole to win the Charles Schwab Challenge. Henley closed with a 3-under 67 and finished at 12 under par. He made 15-foot putts at the 16th and 17th holes before sinking a 17-footer on the 18th to force extra holes.

Playoff and final round details On the first extra hole, also the 18th, Henley made a 5-footer for birdie after Cole missed from 13 feet. Cole shot an even-par 70 and remained tied through regulation. Henley earned $1.78 million for his sixth PGA Tour title along with the plaid jacket and a customized 1982 Jeep Scrambler vehicle.

Contenders and historical context Ben Griffin finished one stroke behind at 11 under after a final-round 65. Griffin started the day six strokes back and recorded five birdies on the front nine. Griffin was seeking to become only the second player after Ben Hogan to win consecutive tournaments at the course.

Hogan achieved consecutive victories in 1946-47 and again in 1952-53. Cole, in his 120th PGA Tour start, held at least a share of the lead throughout regulation before the late surge by Henley.
