Russian missiles strike Kyiv, killing 23 as Ukraine reports interceptor shortage

Russian forces fired 68 missiles and 351 strike drones at Kyiv on Sunday night, killing at least 23 people in the capital and surrounding region, Ukrainian officials said. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that none of the 23 ballistic missiles reached by the attack were shot down because of a shortage of interceptor missiles.

Ukrainian forces intercepted 37 missiles and 326 drones during the assault.

Damage and casualties Three apartment blocks in Kyiv partially collapsed after direct hits. Rescue teams used cranes and search dogs to locate people in the rubble. Ukrainian State Emergency Service officials said 56 people were injured in the capital, including seven children, and 48 more were injured in the wider Kyiv region.

Zelensky appeal Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attack showed the need for additional air-defense systems and called on allies to make decisions at this week's NATO summit. He stated that Moscow would continue striking residential buildings as long as defensive Patriot missiles remain in allied stockpiles.

“The United States and Europe have enough power to stop this terror.”

Hours before the strikes, Zelensky had warned that Russia was preparing another large attack on the capital following Thursday strikes that killed 30 people. Russia said its targets were military and energy facilities in response to recent Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure.
