Russian strike on Kyiv kills at least 30 after Ukrainian attacks cut one-third of Russia’s refining capacity

Russia launched waves of missiles and drones at Kyiv early Monday, killing at least 12 people and wounding 60 more. Ukrainian air force data showed Russia fired 351 drones and 68 missiles overnight, with all 29 ballistic missiles striking their targets. The assault occurred hours after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that a large-scale attack was imminent.

Russia’s Defense Ministry stated the bombardment targeted weapons factories in Kyiv that produce drones, sea drones, armored vehicles and missiles, as well as facilities repairing air defense systems and fuel and energy infrastructure. It described the strikes as retaliation for Ukraine’s recent long-range attacks on Russian oil facilities.

Ukrainian officials said Russia struck civilian residential areas.

A residential building in the Podilskyi district partially collapsed. In the Darnytsia district, several multistory buildings were damaged with people believed trapped under rubble. Emergency workers searched the sites for survivors.

Khrystyna Piatetska, 20, a resident of the Darnytskyi district, said she began screaming after the first strike, which was followed by a second blast that blew out windows in her building. “When we were leaving the building, bodies were lying there,” she said. ” Halina Ivanivna, 61, said she woke to the sound of the first strike at around 2 a.m.

And that her apartment building began to collapse around her. About five minutes later a second strike hit, she said. The attack marked the second major Russian strike on the capital in less than a week.

On Thursday a Russian strike killed 31 people in Kyiv. Zelenskyy will attend a NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, this week and has urged allies to supply more interceptor missiles to counter Russian ballistic weapons. More than 16,000 Ukrainian civilians have been killed in the war, according to a United Nations tally.
