Ryan Fox Shoots 62 to Tie Major Record at 2026 Open
New Zealand's Ryan Fox posted an 8-under 62 in the third round at Royal Birkdale, becoming the third player to reach the mark this week. The round tied the major championship scoring record previously achieved by five others.

Ryan Fox shot an 8-under 62 in the third round of the 2026 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale Golf Club on Saturday. The score tied the major championship single-round record and marked the third time the mark has been reached this week. Fox, 39, from New Zealand, started the round at even par and reached 8 under to join Lucas Herbert as co-leader at that point.
Herbert, from Australia, had posted 62 in the second round. American Sam Burns also shot 62 on Friday before following with a 65 on Saturday to take a two-shot lead into the final round. Fox birdied four of his first six holes and made the turn in 29.
He added birdies on the 10th and 14th before closing with a par on the 18th after a 40-foot putt for birdie fell short of a possible 61. He had one bogey on the 13th. "I think it's just the good weather conditions," Fox said after the round.
"It's obviously very firm and fast. In the mornings, the greens are a little bit softer. " Five golfers had previously recorded a 62 in a major, most recently Xander Schauffele and Shane Lowry during the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla.
Fox is a 19-time winner on professional tours worldwide and a two-time PGA Tour winner.
