Aryna Sabalenka defeated Naomi Osaka 7-5, 6-3 in the round of 16 at the French Open on Monday night. The match lasted 87 minutes and was the first women's night session at Roland-Garros in three years. Both players are four-time Grand Slam champions.

Sabalenka will next face Russia's Diana Shnaider in the quarterfinals. Nineteen-year-old Joao Fonseca reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal by defeating 15th-seeded Casper Ruud 7-5, 7-6(10/8), 5-7, 6-2 on Court Philippe-Chatrier. The match lasted just under four hours and brought Fonseca's total court time at the tournament to 14-and-a-half hours.

Fonseca had already defeated Novak Djokovic in the third round. He matched Ruud with 51 winners and 52 unforced errors. "I feel tired," Fonseca said. "I just try to be me on court, try to be happy, try to hit winners, try to hit good shots, try to be entertainment," he added.

Fonseca will face 26th-seeded Jakub Menšík, who defeated 11th seed Andrey Rublev in five sets. Fifteen-year-old Marta Kostyuk defeated world number one Iga Świątek 7-5, 6-1 in the fourth round. The loss marked Świątek's earliest exit at Roland-Garros since 2019 and came on or around her 25th birthday.

"I'm still in shock," Kostyuk said after reaching her second major quarterfinal. "I feel like I've given myself more space to just create something, to challenge my opponents. I try not to focus at all on winning and losing, because I'm not playing tennis to win.

" "It wasn't a good day in the office," Świątek said. "Many things I could manage a bit better, but it was super tough for me today to keep the level that I wanted to. " Świątek has not won a clay title in two years and will defend her Wimbledon title beginning June 29.

Flavio Cobolli and Anna Kalinskaya also advanced to the quarterfinals. The French Open will crown new champions in both draws for the first time since Novak Djokovic and Garbine Muguruza won a decade ago.
