Diana Shnaider defeated world number one Aryna Sabalenka 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 in the French Open quarterfinals on Wednesday at Roland Garros in Paris. Sabalenka won the first set 6-3. She led 5-3 in the second set before Shnaider won seven of the next nine games to take the set 7-5.

Shnaider won the third set 6-0. A turning point came in the second game of the third set when, on deuce with Sabalenka holding serve, Shnaider hit a forehand passing winner that left the Belarusian flat-footed on the service line. Sabalenka threw her hands in the air after the decisive point.

The 23rd-ranked Russian reached her first Grand Slam semifinal. Fox News reported that Shnaider will next play Poland's Maja Chwalinska, who is ranked outside the top 100. Fox News also reported that Shnaider played collegiately at NC State before turning professional in 2023.

The result continues a pattern of upsets at the 2026 French Open. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner lost in the second round to Juan Manuel Cerundolo. The highest remaining seed on the women's side is No. 8 Mirra Andreeva, while No.

2 seed Alexander Zverev is the top remaining player on the men's side. Aryna Sabalenka is a four-time Grand Slam winner.
