Samsung Electronics considers new chip plant in Gwangju

Samsung Electronics is considering the southwestern city of Gwangju for a new semiconductor production facility. Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong said Gwangju is the candidate site for the new base. The facility would complement the company's existing semiconductor production bases concentrated in the wider Seoul metropolitan area.

Government initiative Lee made the remarks during a televised briefing in which President Lee Jae Myung unveiled the government's "three mega projects" initiative. The strategy aims to strengthen South Korea's competitiveness in advanced technologies and transform the country into an industrial powerhouse in the era of artificial intelligence.

Under the initiative, the company also plans to expand its robotics investment in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, while building high-bandwidth memory production facilities in Chungcheong Province.
