Samsung Electronics Co. and SK hynix Inc. will unveil investment plans this week, the presidential office said Sunday.
The announcement is scheduled for a government briefing at 2 p.m. Monday at Cheong Wa Dae. The briefing will cover three government projects focused on balanced regional development, according to the presidential office.
The trade, science, transport and energy ministries are jointly advancing the initiative. Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong and SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won are expected to attend and participate in a discussion session.
President Lee Jae Myung spoke at a meeting on nurturing South Korea's semiconductor sector in the era of artificial intelligence on December 10, 2025. He described the investment as a "historic achievement" and a policy initiative that could potentially change the fate of South Korea.
Industry observers anticipate the two chipmakers will commit more than 1,000 trillion won (US$650 billion) over the next decade. Part of the spending may support a chip cluster in the southwestern Honam region.
The presidential office did not specify the exact amount of investment or the locations of the projects in its announcement.
