Scheffler Putts from Fringe on 72nd Hole, Leaves 10-Foot Par Putt

Scottie Scheffler attempted a putt from off the 18th green on the 72nd hole of The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale on July 19, 2026. After a birdie on the 17th, he needed a three on the last hole to reach nine under par and claim the clubhouse lead. His ball stopped just short of the right-side bunker.

Scheffler had the flag removed and putted from the fringe. The stroke left him roughly 10 feet short for par. yardbarker.com reported the sequence from the final round. Sir Nick Faldo said on Sky Sports that a wedge shot would have been the better option.

“We are shocked because he had the perfect action where he just wipes across it with the 60 degree,” Faldo said. ” Scheffler said after the round that he feared a wedge would carry too much momentum down the slope. “Hit a good putt, just didn’t go in,” he said.
