Scotland Defeats Haiti 1-0 While Brazil Draws with Morocco in 2026 World Cup Group C
John McGinn scored the winner as Scotland returned to the World Cup with a victory over Haiti. The result placed Scotland atop Group C ahead of a match against Morocco.
Al JazeeraScotland defeated Haiti 1-0 in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup. John McGinn scored the only goal of the game with a deflected shot. McGinn's strike marked Scotland's first World Cup goal in 28 years.
Scotland's previous appearance in the tournament had come more than 25 years earlier. Brazil had drawn with Morocco in an earlier Group C match. The result left Scotland at the top of the group. Scotland's next match is against Morocco on Friday, June 19, in Boston.
A single point from the team's remaining two fixtures would likely be enough to reach the knockout stage. Thousands of Scotland supporters attended a Boston Red Sox game against the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park after the Haiti match. The Tartan Army filled sections of the stadium and chanted "no Scotland, no Party" throughout the contest.
The supporters also created a continuous Mexican wave around the ballpark. After the final out, fans gathered in the bar area outside Fenway Park and sang songs about McGinn for nearly an hour.
Amy Martin, 31, a Glasgow native who has lived in Boston for 15 years, said the evening stood out. "I've been in Boston for years and this is the best baseball game I've ever been to in my life," she said. Stephen Brown said the atmosphere made the night memorable.
"That was great. Great atmosphere, a great way to do things, it was fantastic," he said. Eric Brown, 63, said the Scottish fans had created the evening's energy. "I loved it. I think we made the party.
I think we definitely had a presence there," he said. "The John McGinn stuff at the end there was fantastic, wasn't it? " Scotland manager Steve Clarke told captain Andy Robertson the result ended a long wait.
