More than 10,000 Scotland supporters attended a Red Sox game at Fenway Park on a humid Sunday night. The visitors received tartan jerseys and sang traditional songs during the event.
bbc.co.ukScotland supporters filled sections of Fenway Park during a Sunday night baseball game between the Red Sox and the Texas team. Organizers estimated roughly 4,000 visitors, though attendance appeared higher once fans entered the 32,000-seat stadium. The visitors received special-edition blue tartan Red Sox jerseys.
Mascots appeared in Highland dress, and the Tartan Army sang "Flower of Scotland" after the U.S. national anthem.
Fans from both countries exchanged information about baseball rules and Scottish football chants. Scotland supporters cheered home runs with the same energy they use for goals at international matches. An organist displayed a "No Scotland, No Party" sign before playing "Loch Lomond." A young couple's engagement was shown on the video screen, drawing loud approval from the stands.
The Red Sox lost 6-4 after a late rally.
One Scotland fan later texted that the score had seemed like 1-0. Boston residents who stayed until the end left after the defeat, but the presence of the visiting supporters created an unusual scene at the 1912 ballpark. Sport can bring groups together regardless of the final score, the report noted.
