Scotland Trains at Inter Miami Facility as It Acclimatises for World Cup Opener Against Haiti
Scotland prepared for humid conditions in Miami with ice barrels and cold tubs. Players face Haiti on 14 June before matches in Boston and Miami.
winnipegfreepress.comScotland trained at Inter Miami's facility on Tuesday under high heat and humidity. Barrels of ice lined the pitch and cold plunge tubs waited after the session. Players sought shade and sprinklers during the workout.
Jack Hendry, 31, who has played for Al Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia for the past three years, addressed the conditions. "Stay hydrated," he said. " Hendry added that the heat changes play. "The game can be a little bit different because you maybe can't run about as much, getting tired very quickly and energy going from you, so it definitely impacts," he said.
Steve Clarke stressed the need to acclimatise this week. The team will open against Haiti on Sunday, 14 June at 02:00 GMT, then face Morocco in Boston and return to Miami for Brazil on Wednesday, 24 June at 23:00. Hendry told BBC Scotland at the squad's hotel in Fort Lauderdale that arriving earlier helped.
"It maybe would have been a shock if we had came out to the Miami game because it hits you as soon as you come off the plane, the humidity and the heat," he said. Water breaks will be used during matches. Hendry said they aid recovery and may affect tactics.
"They're certainly going to help us from a recovery point of view, but maybe tactical as well," he said. The squad's main goal remains reaching the knockout stage. Hendry stated the team will take each match as it comes.
"The main ambition is going to be trying to get out of the group. Then we see where we can go afterwards," he said.
