The New YorkerState Sen. Scott Wiener advanced from Tuesday’s primary election for California’s 11th Congressional District, the seat held by Rep. Nancy Pelosi. With roughly 49 percent of the vote counted early Wednesday, Wiener held 41.3 percent and 44,479 votes, according to the Associated Press. The district covers all but the southernmost neighborhoods of San Francisco.
Connie Chan, a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, stood at 28.6 percent with 30,853 votes. Saikat Chakrabarti, a tech entrepreneur and former campaign manager for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, held 14.9 percent with 16,093 votes. The contest drew 11 candidates and marked the first competitive race for the Northern California seat in nearly four decades.
Wiener, 56, was elected to the state Senate in 2016 and chairs the Senate Budget Committee. He has written more than 100 laws and has focused on LGBT rights, climate policy, and housing measures. He has proposed a federal financing entity to provide low-cost loans for affordable housing.
“The centerpiece of my housing plan is creating a federal financing entity that can directly provide low-cost loans to make sure affordable housing actually gets built." — Saikat Chakrabarti, Washington Examiner, June 3, 2026 Pelosi, 86, who is serving her 18th term, did not endorse Wiener or Chakrabarti. She backed Chan at the end of last month and appeared at a Chan event wearing a T-shirt that read “CONNIE.” Chan also received an endorsement from Sen. Adam Schiff.”
The 11th District race will determine who succeeds Pelosi in the November general election. Wiener has said he would be the strongest candidate to challenge the sitting president.
