Scottish hospital installs 3D robotic exoscope for brain tumour surgery
The Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow became the first facility in Scotland to install the B Braun Aesculap Aeos 3D Robotic Assisted Exoscope. The system provides enhanced image quality and allows surgeons to work in an upright posture. One early patient recovered rapidly after a non-cancerous tumour removal in November 2025.

The Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow installed the B Braun Aesculap Aeos 3D Robotic Assisted Exoscope, becoming the first hospital in Scotland to use the system. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde confirmed the technology supplies high-resolution images, powerful illumination, and improved depth perception for surgeons.
The device also permits surgeons to maintain an upright posture during procedures, replacing the head-down position required by conventional microscopes. Officials said the change supports longer operations and may improve teamwork and training in operating theatres.
A 13-year-old patient from Strathpeffer underwent surgery with the exoscope in November 2025 after an MRI at Raigmore Hospital detected a 13–14 mm non-cancerous tumour on the right side of the brain. Symptoms of pins and needles and left-leg pain had started in April 2025 and worsened over several months.
The patient experienced temporary weakness and paralysis on the left side immediately after the operation. Within days, movement began to return, and the patient was discharged one week later. The patient returned to school in January and has continued to regain strength.
comments Consultant neurosurgeon Roddy O’Kane said the system allows views and angles not possible with traditional microscopes. Clinical lead Emer Campbell stated the technology has already improved workflow and training for theatre staff.
