yardbarker.comSeiya Suzuki left Saturday's 6-1 victory over the Giants after injuring his right knee and was scratched from Sunday's lineup. Suzuki, 31, was injured in the bottom of the fourth inning while attempting to catch a fly ball hit by Giants third baseman Matt Chapman.
He charged the ball, awkwardly fell to the ground as it got under his glove, and was visited on the field by manager Craig Counsell and the training staff before being replaced by Matt Shaw.
Before leaving, Suzuki made a sliding catch and threw out a runner trying to stretch a single into a double. He also extended his hitting streak to 10 games with an RBI single in the third inning. Suzuki was scheduled to be the designated hitter on Sunday but was removed from the lineup about 90 minutes before first pitch after doing pregame running on the field.
Moises Ballesteros replaced him. "He feels good," Counsell said. "We're just going to give him another day. " Suzuki said through the team interpreter that he stopped once he realized he could not get the ball.
"I felt like my knee kind of moved," he said. Counsell noted Suzuki's defensive work on Saturday. "He made some wonderful plays," Counsell said. "He made a great throw and a great sliding catch. " Suzuki had doubled twice on Friday after hitting a grand slam in Colorado on Thursday.
772 OPS. Suzuki injured the same knee during the World Baseball Classic and began the season on the injured list. The Cubs still believe the injury is not serious. Suzuki said on Saturday he was hoping the issue would prove minor.
"I'm wishing it's not a big deal," he said. " If Suzuki is out for an extended period, Matt Shaw and Michael Conforto would likely see increased playing time, ESPN reported.
