Senate Republicans faced a series of amendments during an overnight "vote-a-rama" on a nearly $70 billion reconciliation bill funding immigration enforcement agencies through fiscal 2029. The bill passed 4 a.m. Friday after several proposals targeting administration plans failed to reach the 60-vote threshold.
Amendments on funding and appointments One amendment sought to block a proposed $1.776 billion "anti-weaponization" fund. It failed 49-50, with Republican Sens. Susan Collins, Dan Sullivan and Jon Husted joining Democrats. A later amendment aimed to require congressional approval for a planned 90,000-square-foot White House ballroom.
It also fell short, supported by Collins, Sullivan, Husted, Lisa Murkowski, Jerry Moran and Thom Tillis. Sen. Bill Cassidy offered a separate measure to block the anti-weaponization fund. It received backing from the same six Republicans but did not advance.
Pulte nomination and reconciliation bill Collins and Murkowski supported an amendment to prevent mortgage chief Bill Pulte from serving as acting director of national intelligence while leading the Federal Housing Finance Agency. The amendment did not pass. Murkowski was the only Republican to vote against the reconciliation bill itself.
House actions on military and foreign policy The House Armed Services Committee approved language requiring the Pentagon to explain dismissals of senior military officers. The House also passed a largely symbolic resolution calling for an end to the Iran war, supported by four Republicans. A separate measure backing aid to Ukraine passed with support from 18 Republicans and one independent.
