Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced on 27 June 2026 that he will resign within weeks and called for early presidential and parliamentary elections. “I will be president for only a few weeks, and then I will resign,” Vučić told supporters at a rally in Belgrade, Euronews reported. His second and final term had been scheduled to end in mid-2027.
Vučić said he would assist the Serbian Progressive Party in winning the votes, including snap parliamentary elections originally planned for 2027. He did not give a precise date for his departure or for the dissolution of parliament. The announcement followed a year and a half of student-led protests that began after a railway station canopy collapsed in Novi Sad, killing 16 people.
Demonstrators had demanded early elections throughout the period.
