Serena Williams Tweaks Right Knee in Wimbledon Singles Loss

Serena Williams tweaked her right knee during a first-round singles loss at Wimbledon on July 1 2026. ESPN reported that the injury occurred at the end of the first set against Maya Joint. Williams lost the match 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 in 2 hours and 22 minutes.
This was Williams' first singles match since the 2022 US Open. The 44-year-old did not request medical treatment during the match and showed no visible signs of injury on court. She did not attend the post-match news conference.
Smoller added that the Wimbledon and WTA medical teams excused Williams from speaking with reporters. "She left site that night unaided and is doing everything she can to be ready for her doubles match later this week," Smoller said. " She and Venus Williams are scheduled to play together in the first round against Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra.
The sisters are six-time Wimbledon doubles champions, with their last title in 2016. Williams received a wild card to compete at Wimbledon 2026. She played two doubles tournaments before the event alongside Victoria Mboko and Karolina Muchova.
