Serena Williams and Victoria Mboko have withdrawn from the doubles competition at the Queen’s Club tournament in west London after Mboko suffered a knee injury. Mboko slipped on the grass surface during her singles match against Karolina Pliskova on Wednesday.
She held her left knee and retired from the match after losing the first set. Williams, 44, returned to competition on Tuesday and partnered with Mboko to defeat Nicole Melichar Martinez and Erin Routliffe 7-6(2), 6-2.
Williams has received a doubles wildcard for the upcoming Berlin tournament. She has not ruled out competing at Wimbledon. The All England Lawn Tennis Club chief stated that the wildcard committee will announce decisions next week and noted the excitement surrounding Williams’s return to grass-court tennis.
