Serena Williams withdrew from her scheduled Wimbledon doubles match with sister Venus Williams on Saturday after sustaining a right knee injury during her singles match earlier in the week. Open. Williams, 44, received wild-card entries for both singles and doubles and had practiced as recently as Friday afternoon. She announced the decision in an Instagram post that included video of her limping down a hallway with her right knee bandaged and photographs of four syringes containing yellow fluid drained from the joint after Tuesday's match.
"I'm heartbroken to have to withdraw from doubles," Williams wrote. "Coming back to compete again has been a gift, and the opportunity to play alongside @venuswilliams once more meant the world to me," she added. Williams lost her first-round singles match to Australia's Maya Joint, 3-6, 7-6(8), 3-6, on June 30.
She did not speak to reporters after that match, and tournament officials said she was unable to fulfill media obligations. "The good news is my knee shouldn't swell or collect that much fluid again," she wrote. Williams thanked tournament director Jamie Baker and the All England Club staff for accommodating her schedule and expressed appreciation to fans.
"All I can say is stay tuned to a city near you," she added. She has won 13 Wimbledon titles, including seven singles crowns and six women's doubles titles with Venus. The pair last competed together at a major in New York in 2022.
Williams largely stepped away from competitive tennis after 2022 while raising her two daughters, now aged eight and three.
