New Zealand defeated France 34-32 in Christchurch on Saturday in the opening fixture of the inaugural Nations Championship. Will Jordan scored tries in the seventh and 71st minutes, while Cam Roigard crossed twice for the All Blacks. Peter Lakai also scored for New Zealand.
Ruben Love kicked three conversions and one penalty. France replied with tries from Damian Penaud, Antoine Hastoy, Theo Attissogbe and Matthieu Jalibert. Maxime Lucu kicked two conversions and two penalties, and Hastoy added one conversion.
France scored first through Penaud inside the opening two minutes. Ruben Love was sin-binned in the third minute for a high tackle. New Zealand led 19-13 at half-time after tries from Lakai and Roigard.
Hastoy narrowed the gap early in the second half before Roigard scored his second try. Attissogbe crossed just before the hour, and Jalibert scored in the 78th minute to set up a tense finish. A try by Fabien Brau-Boirie was disallowed for a knock-on.
All Blacks captain Ardie Savea said: "It was tough. " New Zealand next hosts Italy. France travels to Australia.
