Settlement Bars Federal Government From Future Tax Probes of Trump Family

The U.S. Department of Justice announced Tuesday that the federal government reached a settlement resolving a lawsuit filed by Trump and his family against the Internal Revenue Service. The agreement permanently bars the government from investigating or prosecuting any claims, appeals, examinations, or reviews related to tax returns filed by Trump, his family members, related or affiliated individuals, the Trump Organization, affiliated companies, and associated trusts.

The settlement covers tax returns filed before May 19 and applies to both ongoing audits and any future issues discovered in those returns. Officials said the agreement does not prevent future investigations into other matters.

As part of the settlement, the acting attorney general established the Anti-Weaponization Fund to allow Americans who say they experienced prior federal investigations to file claims for redress. Officials said the fund provides a process for individuals to seek compensation for what they describe as past government actions.

The money comes from an ongoing Treasury account that pays certain court judgments and settlements against the federal government.

In a letter to officials, Caputo requested $2.7 million in restitution for what he described as nearly a decade of federal investigations. Caputo stated that the scrutiny began in July 2016 during the FBI's Crossfire Hurricane investigation and continued through December 2025.

He said the investigations drained savings, affected his career and health, and caused significant family hardship. Caputo added that thousands of families have faced similar situations and expressed support for the settlement as a step toward addressing past government actions.
