Sinner Opens French Open With Straight-Sets Win Over Tabur
World number one Jannik Sinner defeated French wildcard Clement Tabur 6-1 6-3 6-4 in the first round at Roland Garros. The 24-year-old Italian extended his winning streak to 30 matches and remains the strongest favorite for the title.
bbc.co.ukJannik Sinner opened his French Open campaign with a straight-sets victory over French wildcard Clement Tabur on Court Philippe Chatrier. The top seed won 6-1 6-3 6-4 in two hours and eight minutes, conceding no break points during the match.
Sinner produced consistent winners while limiting unforced errors in the opening two sets. Tabur, ranked 171st, was unable to create any break opportunities. The Italian improved to a 30-match winning streak that includes titles in Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome.
Sinner is the heaviest favorite at a Grand Slam tournament since Rafael Nadal at the 2009 French Open. Reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz is sidelined by injury, and 24-time major winner Novak Djokovic is nearing retirement. A victory in Paris would give Sinner the career Grand Slam and make him the tenth man to achieve the feat.
Sinner and Alcaraz have won the last nine majors between them. Sinner's only previous appearance on Chatrier at the French Open ended in a five-set loss to Alcaraz in last year's final.
Sinner will next face Argentina's Juan Manuel Cerundolo, ranked 56th, who defeated Britain's Jacob Fearnley on Tuesday. Other seeds in Sinner's half of the draw suffered early exits, including sixth seed Daniil Medvedev and ninth seed Alexander Bublik.
