Sioux City Man Pleads Guilty to Transporting Two Stolen Vehicles and Illegal Firearm Possession
Dakota James Mrozinski entered a guilty plea in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa to one count of transportation of stolen vehicles and one count of felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. The conviction triggers a mandatory minimum sentence and requires forfeiture of the seized property.
usatoday.comSIOUX CITY, Iowa — Dakota James Mrozinski, 30, pleaded guilty June 1 in federal district court here to transporting two stolen vehicles across state lines and illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon.
Mrozinski admitted he transported a stolen 2020 GMC Sierra pickup truck and a stolen 2015 Jeep Wrangler from South Dakota into Iowa. He also acknowledged possessing a Taurus G2 9mm pistol and 17 rounds of ammunition despite a prior felony conviction that barred him from doing so.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and local law enforcement recovered both vehicles and the firearm.
The plea agreement calls for Mrozinski to forfeit the Taurus pistol, the ammunition, and any interest in the two stolen vehicles. Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 8. The transportation count carries a maximum of 10 years in prison; the felon-in-possession count carries a maximum of 10 years and a mandatory special assessment.
This case forms part of routine federal enforcement against interstate vehicle theft rings and prohibited firearm possession. The Northern District of Iowa U.S. Attorney’s Office handled the prosecution. The plea resolves the criminal case against Mrozinski without trial.
The guilty plea establishes a concrete criminal record that will be used in any future federal sentencing calculations under the Armed Career Criminal Act or career-offender guidelines if Mrozinski reoffends. Federal probation officers must now prepare a presentence investigation report that incorporates the admitted conduct, and the court must impose the statutory forfeiture.
No broader enforcement initiative was cited in the Department of Justice announcement.
This marks the latest felony weapons and stolen-property conviction secured by federal prosecutors in northwest Iowa this year. The original criminal complaint was filed after joint investigation by the Sioux City Police Department and federal agents.
