Six people, five of them children, died when a dilapidated residential building collapsed on Sunday in eastern Mumbai, South China Morning Post reported. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde said the structure trapped residents under debris. More than 200 millimeters of rain fell in the city within a 24-hour period, according to the India Meteorological Department.
The downpour flooded roads, forced school closures and paralyzed parts of Mumbai. Landslides triggered by the rain closed the expressway linking Mumbai to Pune, disrupting traffic between the two cities. Flights were delayed and long-distance train services, including routes between Mumbai and Pune, were cancelled.
