A business jet with six people on board crashed on a highway in Laredo, Texas, and caught fire Tuesday night, killing one person and sending bystanders rushing from their vehicles to help free those inside. , authorities said. One passenger died in the crash.

A person in a car hit by the debris was taken to a hospital in stable condition.
Drivers who encountered the burning wreckage captured video and ran toward the aircraft. Two people arrived with a sledgehammer and shovel and used the tools to strike the cockpit glass and prop open a door. Five officers later received treatment for smoke inhalation.
A witness who stopped across from the jet said she saw someone inside trying to break a cockpit window. Others joined from their vehicles and struck the glass from the outside as flames spread along the fuselage.

The plane had departed San José del Cabo, Mexico, earlier that evening and was headed to Austin. The Federal Aviation Administration said the cause remains under investigation. An airport official told local television the jet experienced a mechanical failure.
NetJets confirmed the aircraft belonged to the company and said it is cooperating with investigators. The firm is owned by Berkshire Hathaway. No other injuries on the ground were reported beyond the hospitalized motorist. The crash marks the third significant U.S. aviation incident in three days.
