Software Error Added 6,600 Non-Citizens to New Jersey Voter Rolls; Federal Warning Cited Up to 35,000

A software error at the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission automatically registered applicants for driver's licenses or ID cards who answered no to a citizenship question, adding approximately 6,600 non-citizens to the state's voter rolls between June 2023 and June 2024.

Fewer than 400 of those individuals cast ballots in elections since 2023. Governor Mikie Sherrill disclosed the registrations Tuesday after receiving a letter from the Department of Homeland Security that cited a figure of 35,152 non-citizens on the rolls.

Sherrill said the registered non-citizens included Democrats, Republicans and unaffiliated voters scattered across the state, and she stated the state has no evidence that any elections were swayed. Her office asked the Trump administration for evidence supporting the higher number and has received no response.

The New Jersey Globe reported that the vendor responsible for the error is IDEMIA, a French firm.

Sherrill said her office hired CSG Law to investigate and plans to switch software vendors as soon as next year. Officials are sending letters to affected individuals and removing non-citizens from the rolls. In a prime-time address last week, President Trump claimed nearly 250,000 non-citizens were registered to vote across California, New Jersey, Nevada and Pennsylvania.

Sherrill said President Trump has done more to undermine free elections in this country than anyone in her lifetime, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, and that he has zero credibility on the issue of election integrity.
