Michael Vachon discussed fundraising and name recognition for Democrat Scott Colom during a call with Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Incumbent Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith's campaign criticized the involvement of out-of-state donors.
Fox NewsMichael Vachon, a top advisor to George Soros, joined a call earlier this month with Sen. Elizabeth Warren and former Rep. Joe Kennedy to discuss Scott Colom's campaign for U.S. Senate in Mississippi, Fox News reported.
Colom, a Democrat and district attorney, is challenging incumbent Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith. Vachon stated on the call that Colom can win because conditions are right at both the national and local levels.
He identified name recognition as the main hurdle and said money is required to overcome it. Members of the Soros family have given nearly $30,000 to Colom's campaign this cycle, according to Federal Election Commission filings. Hyde-Smith communications director Nathan Calvert said Colom has relied on out-of-state liberal elites and that Soros' network and Warren are treating Mississippi as a stepping stone for a national agenda.
Hyde-Smith previously used her blue-slip authority to block Colom's nomination for a federal district judgeship. Colom said his record as district attorney shows he makes decisions based on evidence and the law rather than donors. He described his campaign as grassroots and pointed to $14,000 in fertilizer industry donations Hyde-Smith has received since 2018, including $11,000 from Koch Industries and $3,000 from Nutrien, both under federal investigation for alleged price inflation.
Warren said on the call that a Democratic majority should pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, end gerrymandering, and grant D.C. statehood.
