South Korea's vice foreign minister called for an early resumption of free trade agreement negotiations with Mexico during bilateral talks held in Seoul on July 6. The meeting marked the eighth round of high-level policy consultations between the two countries.
Officials said the talks covered trade, investment, artificial intelligence, space technology, culture, defense, and regional affairs. Negotiations on the bilateral free trade agreement began in 2007 but stalled in 2008. A 2022 agreement to restart the talks produced no formal sessions.
The vice foreign minister noted that restarting the agreement could help both countries diversify supply chains and respond to global economic uncertainties. The two countries held their first bilateral leaders' summit in nine years on the sidelines of the 2025 Group of Seven meeting.
