YonhapSouth Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store met July 8 in Ankara to discuss ways to deepen cooperation in security, technology and defense, Yonhap reported. The talks took place on the sidelines of the NATO summit, where Lee participated as the leader of one of the alliance's partner countries.
Lee said the two nations are deepening ties into a mutually beneficial relationship in the economy, industry, culture and defense amid growing global instability.
"During today's bilateral talks, I would like to discuss in depth how and in what areas we can further deepen our relations," Lee said. He expressed hope for stronger cooperation in advanced defense technologies and the broader defense industry, citing Norway's trust in South Korean weapons systems.
Store noted progress in bilateral ties since last year, including important decisions in the defense industry that he said would elevate relations into a strategic partnership.
In January, South Korea's Hanwha Aerospace Co. secured a deal to supply Norway with Chunmoo artillery systems and guided missiles. Store also cited progress in security, trade and technology. Lee called for Norwegian cooperation with a South Korean delegation visiting Norway to secure additional supplies of mackerel.
He identified new renewable energy, shipbuilding and maritime affairs as areas for tangible cooperation. Store voiced hope for stronger cooperation in the maritime and energy sectors. The leaders agreed to exchange visits at mutually convenient times and pledged to continue close communication on ensuring peace and stability in the international community, presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said.
