South Korean Satellite Enters Orbit After Falcon 9 Launch From California Base

A South Korean Earth observation satellite reached low-Earth orbit after lifting off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on July 7, the Korea AeroSpace Administration said. A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying the next-generation midsized satellite No. 4 launched at 12:12 a.m.

California time, or 4:12 p.m. South Korea time, as part of the Transporter-17 rideshare mission that included 81 payloads. The satellite separated from the rocket at approximately 6:42 p.m. South Korea time and established its first contact with the Svalbard ground station in Norway 23 minutes later.

The spacecraft is the first South Korean satellite dedicated to agriculture and forestry. It carries a domestically developed wide-area observation camera designed to image the entire Korean Peninsula every three days, supporting applications that include crop monitoring, forest management, disaster response and climate analysis.

KASA Administrator Oh Tae-seog said the launch strengthens private-sector capabilities.

"By independently securing satellite imagery and data needed for agriculture, forestry, climate and disaster response, we have strengthened the competitiveness of our private-led satellite industry and the country's capabilities in utilizing satellite information," he said.

If initial operations proceed as planned, the satellite will undergo three to four months of image calibration and data verification before entering full-scale service in the first half of 2027, KASA said.
