South Sudan and UN Activate First Drought Anticipatory Plan for 65,000 People in Eastern Equatoria
The UN World Food Programme and South Sudan government launched the plan on 10 July 2026 in Eastern Equatoria state. It provides cash aid to 52,751 people and early warnings to more than 65,000 others ahead of expected dry conditions.

The UN World Food Programme and the Government of South Sudan activated the country's first drought anticipatory plan on 10 July 2026. The plan targets more than 65,000 people in Budi and Kapoeta North counties in Eastern Equatoria state. AllAfrica reported that 52,751 people are receiving cash assistance to meet essential food and livelihood needs.
More than 65,000 people are also receiving early warning communications and awareness campaigns on drought preparedness, livestock management, water use, and livelihood planning. The plan was funded with $1.08 million from the Korea International Cooperation Agency and $1.37 million from Germany.
Previous investments from Ireland and KOICA helped establish South Sudan's anticipatory action system.
Mutinta Chimuka, WFP Country Director in South Sudan, said anticipatory action is transforming the way climate-related shocks are managed. She added that the approach supports communities based on forecasts and evidence before livelihoods are disrupted. Agro-pastoral communities in Eastern Equatoria depend heavily on seasonal rainfall for crops and livestock.
Prolonged dry spells can lead to crop and livestock losses, reduced incomes, and worsening food insecurity. The plan combines scientific forecasts, early warning information, and pre-arranged financing.
