Space Force Budget Seeks New Operations and Electronic Warfare Centers
Space Force officials described plans to build additional ground-based space operations centers and tactical electronic warfare sites after losses during Operation Epic Fury. The service's fiscal 2027 budget request includes funding for four new centers and growth in classified programs.
Space Force officials stated that the loss of capabilities during Operation Epic Fury has prompted plans to disaggregate ground-based space operations centers and establish new tactical electronic warfare sites. Brig. Gen. Christopher Fernengel, director of plans and programs in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Space Operations for Strategy, Plans, Programs and Requirements, spoke at the State of Space Industrial Base conference in New Mexico.
He said space capabilities had been targeted and destroyed for the first time during the operation and that similar targeting is expected in the future, whether outside or inside the continental United States.
The Space Force relies on the Air Force for military construction funding. Fernengel also noted significant investment in several space electronic warfare tactical operations centers, to be established both domestically and abroad. The funding is described as buried in the budget request.
The service's classified budget request for fiscal 2027 reaches $17.3 billion. Officials said the classified portion funds new missions intended to support long-range kill chains for the joint force. Personnel growth is planned alongside new systems.
The request calls for an increase of 2,800 military members and slightly more than 2,000 civilians in 2027, with goals of reaching 25,000 military and 12,500 civilians by 2031.
