Spain Reports 39,700 Hectares Burned Through Late June 2026

Spain recorded 39,700 hectares burned through 21 June 2026, according to data compiled by the Ministry for Ecological Transition from reports submitted by autonomous communities. The European Forest Fire Information System, which relies on satellite imagery, placed the total near 50,000 hectares for the same period. June accounted for the largest monthly total so far, with 15,900 hectares burned.

July began with fewer large incidents at the time the figures were compiled. Cantabria recorded the highest regional total at 15,500 hectares. Álava reported roughly 100 hectares, a figure above its historical average for the period despite remaining small in absolute terms.

Fourteen fires each exceeding 500 hectares were logged through the reporting date. The most recent occurred on the Costa Brava on 3 July, followed by incidents in San Bartolomé de la Torre and Villanueva de los Castillejos in Huelva, Alcampell in Huesca, Obejo in Córdoba, and Congosto in León. Since 2000, Spain has recorded 353 major forest fires.

These events represent a small share of total ignitions but account for most of the area burned and produce long-term ecological effects. Across the European Union, burned area reached approximately 130,400 hectares by the same date, 16 percent above the historical average. Slovakia exceeded its seasonal norm, while Estonia recorded a total eight times higher than expected.

Portugal activated the European Civil Protection Mechanism in response to active fires. Euronews reported that France maintained multiple active fire fronts during the period. The pattern of concentrated summer damage has repeated in prior seasons, leaving open the question of whether July and August 2026 will follow the same distribution.
