Spain Records Over 1,000 Heat-Related Deaths in June

Spain recorded more than 1,000 heat-related deaths in June as a heatwave struck much of the country and broader Europe. Provisional data from the State Meteorological Agency showed the average temperature across mainland Spain reached 23.2 °C, 3.2 °C above the 1991–2020 average.
The heatwave between 22 and 24 June produced the two hottest June days on record, with temperatures breaking daily marks across the northern half of the mainland. Officials classified the episode as extraordinary due to its intensity, duration, and geographic reach. The same period also marked Spain's second-hottest June since systematic measurements started.
The Ministry of Health's daily mortality monitoring system provisionally estimated nearly 900 deaths linked to high temperatures, with more than 600 occurring during the heatwave week. Updated figures later placed the total above 1,000, more than double the 407 deaths recorded in June 2025.
The system calculates excess deaths by comparing observed mortality with expected levels during periods of elevated temperatures.
Data show only two June heatwaves occurred between 1975 and 2000, compared with ten between 2000 and 2025. Scientists stated that an event of this scale would have been virtually impossible without climate change driven by greenhouse gas emissions.
