Fifteen Indian tourists died after a speedboat capsized near Phu Quoc island in southern Vietnam on Saturday. The vessel overturned about 400 metres from Hon May Rut Ngoai island while carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members. Twenty-one people were rescued, and injured survivors have been hospitalised.
The speedboat had left Hon May Rut Ngoai island after noon and was returning to An Thoi International Port when the incident occurred. Nearby boats rushed to the scene and began pulling out passengers before Vietnamese border guards, navy and coastguard arrived. Many victims were trapped inside the vessel, complicating rescue efforts.
The cause of the accident remains unknown. India’s embassy in Hanoi stated that rescue operations by Vietnamese authorities were continuing. The embassy has set up control rooms in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to coordinate with victims’ families.
“Exact details of the incident are being ascertained,” the embassy stated. Phu Quoc, located in the Gulf of Thailand, is one of Vietnam’s best-known beach destinations. Hon May Rut Island lies about 10 km south of Phu Quoc.
