Stanford Athletics Secures NCAA Championship for 50th Consecutive Year

Stanford University has won an NCAA team championship for the 50th consecutive year, following the men's gymnastics team's victory in Champaign, Illinois. The streak began with a men's water polo win over UCLA in 1976 and includes 126 national titles out of the university's record 138 overall NCAA team titles.

Retired tennis coach Dick Gould stated that earlier decades saw limited successes, with men's golf winning in 1953 and men's swimming in 1967. He noted that the university's football team went 0-10 in 1960. Gould added that coaches and athletes previously believed it was difficult to succeed athletically at Stanford due to academic demands.

In the current academic year, the women's cross country and soccer teams placed second before the men's gymnastics win extended the streak. Retired women's basketball coach Tara VanDerveer stated that Stanford has outstanding coaches and student-athletes, with her teams winning three titles.

Women's tennis has 20 NCAA team titles at Stanford, followed by men's tennis with 15, men's water polo and women's swimming and diving with 11 each, and women's water polo and men's gymnastics with 10 each.

Dick Gould coached men's tennis from 1966 to 2004, achieving a record of 776-148, and included players such as John McEnroe and Roscoe Tanner. His wife coached the women's tennis team to its first national title in 1978.
