Steak 'n Shake will switch its beef to 100% grass-fed and grass-finished starting June 1. The chain announced the change in a May 12 social media post, stating that all beef will come from pasture-raised cattle. "Starting June 1, we’re doing things better at Steak n Shake — all our beef will come straight from pasture-raised cattle.

This beef will be 100% grass-fed and grass-finished, making us the only American burger joint serving the healthiest kind of beef," the company said on X. The switch is the latest step in the chain's alignment with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. 's "Make America Healthy Again" efforts.

Boes helped develop the 2025–2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and previously served as a senior adviser in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Health. " Sardar Biglari, chairman and CEO of Biglari Holdings, the owner of Steak 'n Shake, said the appointment signals the chain's commitment to differentiation.

"Michael is ideally suited for such a role, with his deep understanding of nutrition and his experience at the highest level of health policymaking," Biglari stated. " Steak 'n Shake did not immediately respond to a USA TODAY request for comment on the beef change. The company has pursued other MAHA-aligned changes in recent months.

In March 2025, Steak 'n Shake switched from seed oils to beef tallow for cooking. The chain posted at the time, "Steak 'n Shake is proud to support MAHA and Secretary Kennedy! Your days are numbered seed oil.

We want to lead the way and make a difference! " Kennedy Jr. " In August, the chain began offering Coca-Cola soda sweetened with cane sugar in glass bottles. It also announced plans to install the "tallest and biggest American flag that local governments will allow" at each location.

In February, Steak 'n Shake said it would remove all microwaves from franchise locations by April. The company wrote, "quality restaurants don't need microwaves. It is part of our journey to improve food quality and use traditional methods of cooking only.
