Study finds tire particles can enter crops via soil

Israeli researchers documented that particles shed from vehicle tires can move from roads into nearby agricultural soil and then into crops. The study identifies a previously unmeasured pathway that links road traffic emissions with soil contamination and food production.

Around the world, approximately 1.5 billion tires are produced each year. Tire-wear particles are now recognized as one of the largest sources of microplastic pollution.

Research findings The researchers examined soil and plant samples collected near roads in agricultural areas. They detected tire-derived particles in both the soil and the harvested crops. The results establish a measurable connection between traffic-related emissions, soil quality, and the crops that enter the food chain.

A combine harvesting machine operates in the Hula Valley, the location used for part of the sampling.
