Study Links Higher Homocysteine to Fatigue in Healthy Adults
Researchers at Osaka Metropolitan University examined blood markers and self-reported energy levels in about 600 healthy Japanese adults. Elevated homocysteine correlated with physical tiredness in men and lower motivation in women. The findings were published in the journal Nutrients.
naturalnews.comA study conducted by researchers at Osaka Metropolitan University's Graduate School of Human Life and Ecology found that higher blood levels of homocysteine were associated with greater fatigue and lower motivation among otherwise healthy adults. Approximately 600 participants provided blood samples that were tested for homocysteine, folate, and vitamin B12.
Energy and drive were measured using the Chalder Fatigue Scale and a Visual Analog Scale.
Men with elevated homocysteine reported more physical exhaustion.
Women with the same marker showed reduced motivation. These patterns held after researchers accounted for age, sleep, workload, and diet. Professor Hiroaki Kanouchi, who led the team, said the relationship between the two B vitamins and fatigue in healthy people may be the first such report.
He noted that homocysteine has previously been studied mainly in connection with cardiovascular disease, dementia, and bone fractures. "To prevent an increase in homocysteine levels, it is important to avoid deficiencies in vitamin B12 and folate," Kanouchi stated.
" The study appeared in the journal Nutrients.
