Companies that hire international students through the BridgeUSA Summer Work Travel Program are reporting fewer applicants for summer positions this year. Mike Collins, director of International Aquatics at Continental Pools, said the number of lifeguards arriving through the program is down. He attributed the decline in part to students from Turkey who could not secure embassy appointments.

The Summer Work Travel Program is operated by the Department of State and issues J-1 visas to full-time university students for temporary work in the United States. About 100,000 students participate each year, filling roles at pools, hotels, restaurants, and retail outlets in tourist areas.

Continental Pools, which has used the program since 1999, plans to employ more than 500 students this summer. Collins said local high school and college students are often unavailable for the full season from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Simon, president of United Work & Travel, said the number of participating businesses has remained steady but the requested number of supplemental participants is 5% to 10% lower. S. embassies and that visa issuance varies by country. Collins said uncertainty over approval rates and appointment availability makes it difficult to finalize housing and work schedules until shortly before the season begins.

He added that positions requiring lifeguard certification are harder to fill than other seasonal jobs.
