The ruling permits the Department of Homeland Security to terminate temporary protected status. Florida Rep. Carlos Giménez called the move a mistake given conditions in Haiti.
abcnews.go.comThe Supreme Court upheld the Trump administration’s decision to rescind temporary protected status for Haitian nationals, clearing the way for the Department of Homeland Security to end the program. The ruling affects approximately 350,000 Haitian TPS holders.
A Department of Homeland Security guidance issued last week stated that beneficiaries will retain their status and employment authorization until lower courts align with the decision.
The same ruling also authorizes ending TPS for approximately 6,000 Syrian nationals. Florida Rep. Carlos Giménez said on CBS’s “Face the Nation” on July 5 that Haiti remains a failed state and that deporting Haitians with TPS would be a huge mistake.
He noted that the program exists to protect people from countries unable to ensure their safety. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said last week that many TPS holders have lived in the United States for 15 or 20 years and should have pursued visas or lawful permanent residency during that period.
Giménez also called for reinstatement of TPS for Venezuelans after twin earthquakes struck that country on June 24.
