Supreme Court Ends Limits on Coordinated Spending Between National Parties and Candidates

The Supreme Court ruled this week that national party committees may coordinate spending directly with their candidates. The decision, issued in NRSC v. FEC, ends previous restrictions that capped coordinated expenditures and barred parties from combining resources with candidate campaigns.

Under prior rules, coordinated party expenditure limits for a Senate nominee reached roughly four million dollars. Campaigns and party committees operated under a legal firewall that prevented them from pooling strategy, data, and resources. The ruling removes that barrier.

It affects contested Senate races in Maine, Michigan, and Ohio, where parties can now place resources directly alongside campaigns rather than running parallel operations. The decision builds on the 2010 Citizens United ruling, which permitted unlimited independent expenditures by corporations and outside groups while still barring direct coordination with campaigns.

Republican fundraising has relied more on large-dollar donors and outside spending, while Democratic campaigns have used small-dollar online giving.

The previous separation made Republican outside spending less efficient because advertising purchased independently cost more and could not be adjusted in real time.
