Survodutide Achieves 13% Weight Loss and Up to 63% Liver-Fat Reduction in Phase 3 Trial, Trailing Existing GLP-1 Drugs
Patients lost 13 percent of body weight on the highest dose after 76 weeks. Liver-fat reduction exceeded placebo by a wide margin.
cnbc.comPatients receiving the highest dose of Boehringer Ingelheim’s weekly injectable survodutide lost 13 percent of their body weight after 76 weeks in a Phase 3 obesity trial, compared with 5 percent for those on placebo. The same study showed that survodutide reduced liver fat by as much as 63 percent, versus 25 percent in the placebo group.
Data were presented June 7, 2026, at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association and published simultaneously in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Survodutide targets both GLP-1 and glucagon receptors. Researchers note that glucagon receptors are present in the liver, which may explain the pronounced effect on liver fat. Weight loss on survodutide was lower than rates reported in pivotal trials of Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy and Eli Lilly’s Zepbound.
The trial lasted 76 weeks. @statnews reported that the findings leave open questions about how competitive the candidate will be, given both the lower weight-loss figures and indications of reduced tolerability compared with existing treatments.
