Survodutide Achieves 63% Liver Fat Reduction and 13% Weight Loss in Phase 3 Obesity Trial
Boehringer Ingelheim’s weekly injectable reduced liver fat more than placebo but produced 13 percent weight loss after 76 weeks, below rates for Wegovy and Zepbound.
qz.comPatients on the highest dose of Boehringer Ingelheim’s survodutide lost up to 63 percent of their liver fat after 76 weeks, compared with 25 percent for those on placebo, according to Phase 3 data presented June 7, 2026 at the American Diabetes Association meeting and published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The same trial showed patients on survodutide lost 13 percent of body weight, versus 5 percent on placebo. That weight-loss figure is lower than the rates reported in pivotal trials of Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy and Eli Lilly’s Zepbound.
Survodutide is a weekly injectable that activates both GLP-1 and glucagon receptors. Researchers note that glucagon receptors are present in the liver, which may explain the larger reduction in liver fat. The data were reported by Elaine Chen in STAT on June 7, 2026.
The article states that survodutide “appears less efficacious and less tolerable than drugs on the market,” leaving its competitive position unclear. The 76-week study compared multiple doses against placebo in adults with obesity. No additional safety or tolerability numbers were released in the reported data.
