Suspect in Trump Assassination Attempt Taken Off Suicide Watch

Cole Allen, the suspect charged in the April 25, 2026 shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, was removed from suicide watch on Sunday, according to his defense lawyers. A court document submitted Sunday stated that Allen was no longer under suicide watch supervision.

His lawyers filed a motion Saturday regarding his suicide watch status and are now seeking to withdraw that motion. A hearing on the conditions of Allen’s confinement is scheduled for May 4, 2026.

Allen had been held under suicide watch since his arrest on April 25, 2026. Court filings described his initial placement in a padded safe cell under 24-hour lockdown procedures that required him to wear a vest akin to a strait jacket and to be strip-searched upon entry and exit from the cell.

He was not allowed to leave the safe cell except for legal or medical visits. Multiple assessments found no indications he was a suicide risk.

According to prosecutor Jeanine Pirro, Allen rushed a Secret Service checkpoint at the Washington Hilton armed with a Mossberg pump-action shotgun, a handgun, and knives. He stormed the security perimeter on a floor above the ballroom where President Trump, administration officials, and hundreds of reporters were gathered.

Pirro stated that Allen made the decision to hatch the plan after President Trump announced on March 2 that he would attend the dinner at the Hilton. She added that a pellet from the buckshot of Allen’s shotgun hit the Secret Service officer’s bullet-resistant vest.

Last week Pirro said there was no evidence the agent was hit by friendly fire. Allen has been charged with attempting to assassinate the president, transportation of a firearm and ammunition in interstate commerce with intent to commit a felony, and discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence.

He remains in custody and has yet to enter a plea.
