Sydney developer Aland fined $220,000 over defect reports
The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Aland Group received the largest fine in the Building Commission's history and 144 regulatory notices since 2019. Engineering reports identified structural and fire safety issues in several completed projects. Premier Chris Minns and Building Commissioner James Sherrard attended a December opening event for one of the company's developments.

Aland Group, a Sydney-based developer, was fined $220,000 by the NSW Building Commission in April 2025, the largest penalty the regulator has issued. The commission also issued 144 regulatory notices to Aland's construction arm since January 2019, including 19 prohibition notices and 12 penalty notices.
The District Court of NSW ordered the company to pay $225,000 in early 2024 after a migrant worker suffered traumatic injuries from a crane load on an Aland site. SafeWork NSW stated it had conducted significant work with Aland B & W Pty Ltd in response to work health and safety issues.
A 500-page engineering report completed in 2025 for an Aland development in Campsie found structural damage in load-bearing elements and waterproofing defects in about 30 percent of inspected apartments. A separate fire engineering report at the same complex concluded the building's fire protection was likely to fail.
Another April 2025 fire safety report at an Aland development in Schofields identified additional defects in the fire safety system. A strata manager had requested an urgent inspection of the Campsie building after observing basement damage.
political context Premier Chris Minns and Building Commissioner James Sherrard attended the December opening of Aland's $375 million Archibald Precinct on the Central Coast alongside company founder Andrew Hrsto. A company spokesperson said Aland and Hrsto acknowledge the conditions and penalties imposed by the Building Commission.
Sherrard stated that meeting with builders and developers is a key part of his role and that engaging with industry does not affect the regulator's ability to take enforcement action. Aland states it has built 5,000 apartments since 2002 and has another 1,500 units under construction.
