Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi attended a meeting of the Upper House audit committee in Tokyo on Monday as her government works to advance legislation before the current parliamentary session concludes on July 17. Japan Times reported that the ruling coalition lacks an Upper House majority and faces opposition resistance to two bills, one reducing the number of parliamentary seats and the other establishing a secondary capital.
The administration is attempting to secure passage of as much legislation as possible before the summer recess.
The Japan Innovation Party agreed to join the Liberal Democratic Party coalition last October in exchange for passage of those two bills. The party is demanding that Takaichi deliver on the agreement by the end of the session scheduled for July 17. Opposition parties remain firmly against both measures.
