winnipegfreepress.comA team placed right-hander Jack Leiter on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a right ankle posterior impingement the pitcher has managed for most of the season. Team officials recalled right-hander Jose Corniell from Triple-A Round Rock. Six of Corniell's seven minor league appearances this season were starts.
Officials did not specify how they would fill Leiter's rotation spot for Tuesday's game at Miami.
Injury details Team president of baseball operations Chris Young said Leiter had been trying to pitch through the ankle issue, which altered his mechanics. Leiter lost all three of his June starts and posted a 9.88 ERA, including seven hits and six runs allowed in four innings against the Minnesota Twins on Thursday.
Young said Leiter first aggravated the ankle by slipping on an on-deck circle during an April 22 game against the New York Yankees. Imaging later showed the injury had worsened. "Jack has not made it an issue. That speaks to his level of competitiveness," Young said.
"We cannot put him in harm's way. " Manager Skip Schumaker said the team had monitored the injury but concluded Leiter could not perform at his usual level. Leiter is 3-7 with a 5.29 ERA in 15 starts this season.
