Teen receives CRISPR-edited cell therapy after standard leukaemia treatments failed
A 13-year-old patient whose bone marrow transplant did not stop T-cell leukaemia received an experimental CRISPR base-edited CAR T-cell treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital. The therapy produced no detectable cancer cells after four weeks, allowing a second transplant. The patient remains in remission at age 17.

A 13-year-old patient with T-cell leukaemia whose standard chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant failed received an experimental CRISPR base-edited CAR T-cell treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. The patient had been diagnosed after Easter 2021 following persistent fatigue and double pneumonia.
Initial chemotherapy at Leicester Royal Infirmary did not work, nor did intensified chemotherapy. A bone marrow transplant at Sheffield Children’s Hospital in October 2021 also failed, leaving weeks of life expectancy according to physicians.
